Ralph Lauren's older brother, Leonard Lauren—known as Lenny—has died at 93, reports Women's Wear Daily. In retirement, he split his time among Palm Beach, Westchester, N.Y., and the Hamptons, as he told Dan's Papersin January. Lenny previously worked as a Vice President at Ralph Lauren.
“Ralph Lauren is not just a fashion line,” Lenny told Dan's Papers. “We’re a lifestyle company that includes sunglasses, sheets, home furnishings. Yes, Ralph Lauren creates clothing. And the good thing about Ralph Lauren is something you bought 10 years ago, can still be worn today. Fashion is in and fashion is out, but Ralph creates style, and style stays.”
Lenny was drafted and served two years in the U.S. Army after college, where he developed a fondness for photography. “I carried around three cameras,” he said. “Everything we shot was in black and white. I know, everyone has an iPhone and shoots everything in color, but you can’t beat black and white. I really think some of our greatest photos might not have happened if they weren’t being shot in black and white.”
Lenny also engaged in philanthropic endeavors, serving on the boards of the National Humane Society and Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, among others.
Funeral services will be held on August 19 at Riverside Memorial Chapel on the Upper West Side of New York City. A livestream will also be available.
Tributes to Lenny have been pouring in on his obituary page. "Len was one of my first welcoming memories from Braeburn from 20 years ago," one friend wrote. "He caught my eye in velvet slippers and then my heart with his stories." She continued, "I saw Len, only last week, smiling as he climbed the club stairs to go to 'his table' for lunch. My only regret is that I was late and could not not go over to give him a hug well deserved."
